Hi, my name is Kanagat and I am from Almaty, Kazakhstan. I will be working as a researcher on the Functiglass project, financed by the European Union’s Horizon Europe programme (MSCA), in Nice and Tampere.
The three pictures I selected show glimpses of the things I love. I love my hometown for its mountains, which a friend of mine beautifully captured in the first photo. I also included a picture of a cozy bookshop, since I enjoy spending my free time reading fantasy. The third photo is from Bulgakov’s House Museum, as he is my favorite author.
My research focuses on developing advanced optical fibers by embedding nanoparticles doped with erbium ions. These erbium-doped nanoparticles emit light around 1.5 µm, a key wavelength used in optical communications and fiber lasers. This work involves synthesizing erbium-doped nanoparticles, incorporating them into silica or silicate glass, and drawing this glass into optical fibers. A major challenge is ensuring that the nanoparticles survive the high temperatures of fiber fabrication and remain well dispersed. The fibers will then be characterized to evaluate their optical losses and emission properties. The goal of this research is to develop a new generation of nanoparticle-containing optical fibers with improved performance compared to conventional erbium-doped fibers, with potential applications in telecommunications and fiber-based lasers.
