Hello! I’m Syeda Kainat Fatima from Pakistan. I will be carrying out my doctoral research at the University of Milano-Bicocca and the University of Côte d’Azur. I enjoy working in collaborative environments and love hiking, traveling, and exploring new places
To describe myself I picked the book the Alchemist, by Coelho. I love The Alchemist because it feels true to life—it’s about trusting yourself, following your dreams, and believing that the universe helps those who take the first step, just like we do here in Pakistan. It’s simple, but it gives hope. Nature is another big passion, especially when biking!
Project: Treasure Hunting in Trash—Recycling Rare Earths from Old Tech! Did you know your old phones, computers, and even glass fibers hide precious « tech vitamins » called rare earths? These metals (like neodymium, europium, and ytterbium) power everything from lasers to smartphones—but mining them is dirty and expensive. What if we could recycle them instead? Our Mission: 1️⃣ Build « Magnet Sponges »: We’re crafting porous, super-absorbent materials (like silica, titanium oxide, and even recycled « geopolymers » from waste) and coating them with molecular hooks that grab only rare earths—ignoring the junk. 2️⃣ Selective Rescue Operation: Each sponge is tuned to catch specific metals, then release them pure and ready for reuse—like a high-tech sieve for atomic treasure! 3️⃣ Test & Upcycle: We’ll check how well the sponges work, then turn the recovered metals into brand-new glowing materials (nanophosphors) for lasers and sensors. The Prize: A clean, circular system to salvage rare earths from e-waste and old fibers—cutting pollution, saving resources, and powering tech’s future!
